Personal Statement

Sekou Jabateh is a Ph.D. student specializing in Comparative Politics. His research focuses on the micro-dynamics of political violence and conflict resolution, with a particular emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa.

He earned his bachelor's degree from New York University Abu Dhabi in 2022, where he received the Social Science Capstone Funding Award and NYUAD’s distinguished Post-Graduation Research Fellowship.

Sekou's undergraduate thesis explored the relationship between ethnic diversity and wartime violence in Liberia. He has also co-authored papers and conducted field experiments in Liberia and Senegal, investigating intergroup cooperation in post-conflict settings and the role of political connections in entrepreneurship in developing countries.

Before joining UC Berkeley, Sekou worked as a Research Fellow at New York University, examining the intersections of conflict, ethnicity, and political economy.

He is a recipient of both the American Political Science Association’s Diversity Fellowship and its First Generation Scholars in the Profession Accessibility Grant.
