Course Description

Examines the law and politics of civil liberties and individual rights in the United States through close reading of United States Supreme Court cases and related material. The course focuses on the Bill of Rights, with an emphasis on the First Amendment, and the Fourteenth Amendment, paying close attention to the way in which constitutional interpretation has shaped the political and legal struggle over issues such as privacy, segregation, desegregation and affirmative action, abortion, free speech, religious liberty.

This course falls within the American Politics/Public Law and Jurisprudence subfields.

Requirements

There will be a midterm, a final exam, and two short (5-7 pages) analytic papers.

Prerequisites

PoliSci 157A is strongly recommended.
