Personal Statement

I am a PhD Candidate in Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. I study interest groups’ influence on political outcomes, focusing on cross-issue spillovers. My current research on firm lobbying on social policy showcases lobbying behavior of advanced large firms, who target not only the firm’s immediate issue area but also operates on the relevant political coalition’s priorities. I plan to expand this research to study firms and the regulatory state’s power struggle, and to investigate the micro mechanisms behind substitution across issues. Substantively, I am interested in the interaction between economic and cultural issues, and my research touches upon antitrust regulation, LGBTQ+ politics, and globalization, focusing primarily on the United States. Methodologically, my research uses both large-n data and qualitative interviews. Before pursuing my PhD studies, I served in the Korean Army as an officer. I obtained my MA and BA from Korea University, in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
