Dinah Lawan

Personal Statement

Dinah Lawan is a second-year Ph.D. student in Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research interests include political violence, specifically in the context of terrorism and insurgency, with a focus on the Boko Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria, peacebuilding, and development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, she explores civilian agency and their broader roles during conflicts, along with violence against women in civil wars.

Prior to starting her Ph.D., Dinah received her B.A. in Political Science, Peace Studies, and Studio Art Ceramics from the University of Notre Dame in 2022. For her senior thesis, she was awarded the 2022 Gary F. Barnabo Political Science Writing Prize by the Notre Dame Department of Political Science.
