PhD Candidate
Personal Statement

I am a student of the history of moral and political philosophy. Before coming to Berkeley, I received my BA from Peking University (Philosophy), and my MA from Duke University (Political Science: Political Theory). I have been particularly interested in a group of deontic categories: law, justice, and obligation. Aristotle, early modern theories of natural law, and Kant help me navigate these areas. Now I am working on a dissertation on Kant and political obligation. My works have appeared (or are forthcoming) in Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie and British Journal for the History of Philosophy:

Zhang, Alex Ding. Forthcoming. “Particular Justice and Its Architectonics in Aristotle's Ethica Nicomachea V.” British Journal for the History of Philosophy.

Zhang, Alex Ding. Forthcoming. “Hugo Grotius on the Loose Obligation of Natural Law.” Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie.
