PhD Candidate
Personal Statement

I study health politics and political economic development from a comparative perspective, with a focus on Latin America, specifically Mexico and Brazil. My dissertation explores why Brazilian mayors varied in their COVID-19 responses despite attempts by state governors to create a uniform response. It also provides a novel theoretical framework that distinguishes everyday politics from what I call subnational crisis politics.

My research employs quantitative and qualitative methods to best explain social and political phenomena. This includes survey experiments, conjoint analyses, ethnographic interviewing, and in-depth case study research. My research has received generous support from the U.S. Fulbright Program, the Institute for International Studies (IIS), the Governance and Local Development Institute at the University of Gothenburg (GLD), the National Science Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (in collaboration with Brown University's Pandemic Center).
