Visiting Scholars/Visiting Student Researchers Policy

The Charles and Louise Travers Department of Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley welcomes requests for visiting appointments from outside scholars, pursuant to the following terms.

Applications for a visiting appointment require:

•             Sponsorship from a member of the Department’s faculty.

•             A brief written statement specifying the scholar’s proposed plan of study.

•             A brief written statement of support from the sponsoring faculty member.

There is a departmental administrative fee of $2,000 for full academic year appointments and $1,000 for one-semester appointments, payable by the visitor or the faculty sponsor.  Each member of the Department’s faculty is limited to sponsorship of one visiting scholar/visiting student researcher per year. Please note that acceptance of an application does not ensure a departmental commitment of office space or computer/IT support to visiting scholars. Other fees (visa, University services fee, etc.) are not included in the department administrative fee. For more information about the appointment process please visit our visiting scholars and postdoc affairs website.

Due dates: U.S. citizens and permanent residents should submit their applications at minimum of 3 months in advance of the proposed visit date; applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents should submit their applications six months in advance of the proposed visit date.
