Course Description

This seminar will concentrate on war ethics including ethics /of/ war (/jus ad bellum/) and ethics /in/ war (/jus in bello/). We will examine just war theory, international law, and state practice looking at examples from a number of conflicts including WWII, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and the Iraq war. Students will each lead one seminar based on a 5 page review of the readings, and will write a 12-15 page research paper, following from a proposal, on the topic of their choice.

The Junior Seminars are intense writing seminars which focus on the research area of the faculty member teaching the course. The seminars will provide an opportunity for students to have direct intellectual interactions with faculty members while also giving the students an understanding for faculty research.

This junior seminar can fulfill an upper division requirement for the major.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites and enrollment processes differ for each seminar. Please read on for important enrollment information!

Political Science Majors of Junior or Senior status, with a minimum overall GPA of 3.3. Students must place themselves on the waitlist through TeleBEARS. Selection and notification will occur around January 7, 2009
