Student Organizations
The Department of Political Science is pleased to support the following student organizations. For information on the organizations, contact information, or how to join, please refer to their website, given below.
The Asian Political Association
Pi Sigma Alpha Honor
Society
Politica
Undergraduate Political
Science Association
The Asian Political
Association (APA)
Asian, Pacific Islander, and South Asian Americans (APSA) are considered
by many to be some of the most apathetic groups in the United States when
it comes to political involvement. As a student group, the Asian Political
Association (APA) hopes to encourage APSA interest and activism in political
activities in order to advocate political awareness among the APSA community
as well as educate the general population on campus on APSA issues in
politics, where APSA make up more than 40% of the student population.
APA aims to not only increase APSA involvement in politics and students'
political awareness on foreign, domestic, Asian, and non-Asian related
issues, but we also hope to create and continually update a network of
opportunities for APSAs to become involved in politics. On top of that,
we also try to prepare politically minded APSAs for future professional
experiences through formal, semi-formal, and social activities.
We constantly look for people who are either just curious about (Asian) politics or are enthusiastic toward similar goals of APA to join us in our dedication to spread political awareness and advocate political activism on campus. APA is not limited to Asian Americans, or any specific major. We encourage everyone to join. If you are interested, please contact us via e-mail at apa@ocf.berkeley.edu or visit our website at http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~apa/indexx.html. You can also find APA on Facebook.
Pi Sigma Alpha
(The National Political Science Honor Society)
The Iota chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha (PSA) at UC Berkeley was started several years ago to provide dedicated Cal Political Science majors a forum to have their voices heard within the department and nationally. Pi Sigma Alpha gives members a chance to participate in and plan lectures, debates, and essay contests. Additionally, Pi Sigma Alpha is an excellent way for students who excel academically to meet with peers, professors, and staff of the Political Science department. The Berkeley Chapter of PSA has five officers (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and Publicist), five committee chairs and one Webmaster, all divided into five distinct committees. We work closely with the Political Science department, the Career Center, and the local community in providing a better atmosphere for the students. All senior PSA members who have satisfied chapter requirements are honored at the Political Science department's graduation ceremony.
In order to qualify for Pi Sigma Alpha membership, students must be junior or senior declared Political Science majors and hold a 3.5 GPA in major classes and a 3.3 cumulative GPA. Undeclared potential majors are not eligible for membership but are welcome at all PSA events, including the professor dinners.
Pi Sigma Alpha meets Tuesdays at 7pm in 202 Barrows Hall. If interested,
please visit us on the web at http:ocf.berkeley.edu/~ucbpsa/index.htm
or e-mail us at psa@berkeley.edu.
POLITICA
POLITICA is not active during the 2007 - 2008 academic year.
POLITICA is an academic journal aimed primarily at undergraduate political science communities and related fields. It solicits both original student essays and faculty articles, on topics broadly political. POLITICA compiles the best of these submissions into a single volume which is published once a semester and distributed throughout the academic community.
The goals of Politica are threefold:
* To provide an open and formal academic forum for the
presentation of
ideas, primarily in the field of political science and in
related disciplines.
* To stimulate independent research and thought into issues
with present and future relevance to our political world.
* To enhance student-faculty academic exchanges through the
creation of an forum wherein a sense of partnership and community
is fostered.
Politica endorses no particular political stance and makes a conscious
effort to ensure fair representation of all well-presented, well-researched
viewpoints.
U.P.S.A. (Undergraduate
Political Science Association)
* Are you interested in Political Science?
* Are you looking into a career in Public Policy or Law?
* Do you want to meet with students and faculty who share similar interests?
* Do you want an organization that will enrich your academic and social world at Cal?
The Undergraduate Political Science Association (UPSA) is the outreach
club of the Political Science department that serves all students interested
in the study of politics. From faculty-student dinners to guest speakers
to Peer Advising Night, our mission is to enhance the educational experience
of Berkeley students while making the campus community more aware of our
local, national, and international political landscape. Furthermore, UPSA
provides a network for students to help, and seek help from, other students.
