Personal Statement:

My research interests lie in democratization, political behaviour and development, campaigns and elections, and ethnic politics with a particular focus on sub-Saharan Africa. My dissertation investigates the variation in intra-group political competition in areas where conventional wisdom often assumes unity. In it, I argue that current ethnic political configurations can be traced back to the work of early ethnic organizations in crafting the social and political identities of their co-ethnics. I rely on original survey data, interviews with ethnic and political elites, and archival research to make the argument. I’m also interested in survey and experimental methodology in the social sciences.
