Aggregate Funding Resources (Thank you ISSC Fellow, Roberto Hernandez):
The following link to resources that provide searchable databases containing a wide range of funding, research, and travel information:
-
http://spo.berkeley.edu/funding.html This link takes you to Berkeley's Sponsored Projects Office, and includes a handful of relevant and necessary information for conducting research while at Berkeley, as well as a direct link to the IRIS database (see below).
- http://fundingopps.cos.com/ The Community of Science Funding Opportunities database is the most comprehensive source of funding information available on the web, and is searchable by funding source or upcoming deadlines.
-
http://www.library.uiuc.edu/iris The IRIS website is available to students affiliated with UCB. It features an excellent searchable database with about 2000 graduate awards and 850+ post-docs. It also offers tools for creating online profiles and CVs. Students may also sign up for an alert service that sends weekly emails about funding opportunities and their deadlines tailored to individual academic profiles.
-
http://www.lib.msu.edu/harris23/grants/ Michigan State University has an amazing database of grants and other funding possibilities that can be searched by academic level, region, discipline, population group, etc. Check out link #5 which concerns grants for individuals.
-
http://www.fis.ncsu.edu/grad_fellows/ While this site includes only a few of the major, nationally competitive fellowships (Fulbright, AAUW, Ford, NSF), it has organized links to these sites conveniently according to the months in which their deadlines fall.
- http://www.umich.edu/%7Eicenter/internet2000.html A great resource for students who will be conducting international travel and research, this website includes information on funding, visas, travel, weather, and other relevant information.
Grant-Writing Resources (Thank you Sabrina Soracco, Graduate Division)
The Academic Services unit of the Graduate Division provides workshops, brownbag information sessions, and individual advising on the grant-writing process. In addition the variety of services found at their website http://www.grad.berkeley.edu/acapro/academic_services.shtml, the department recommends the following resources:
-
“The Art of Writing Proposals: Some Candid Suggestions for Applicants to Social Science Research Council Competitions” by Adam Przeworski and Frank Salomon. Social Science Research Council, September 1988. http://www.ssrc.org/fellowships/art_of_writing_proposals.page. This work is geared for those in the social sciences, but it is still one of the best resources on grant-writing in general.
-
The Holy Grail: In Pursuit of the Dissertation Proposal” by Michael Watts. Dissertation Proposal Workshop, Institute of International Studies, University of California, Berkeley. 2001. http://globetrotter.berkeley.edu/DissPropWorkshop/process/InPursuitofPhD.pdf
-
Sample budgets for grant proposals are available at: http://globetrotter.berkeley.edu/DissPropWorkshop/nuts&bolts/budgeting.html
- Examples of successful research proposals are available at: http://globetrotter.berkeley.edu/DissPropWorkshop/examples/
The department sponsors annual grant-writing workshops led by the Graduate Advisor and has a variety of staff members with background and expertise in grantwriting; all members of the community work together to secure the best funding for its students.
